Immigration Reform is the Answer to Falling American Birth Rates

The United States birth rate fell in 2022 and still has not rebounded to pre-pandemic numbers. Decreasing birth rates are an issue for the government because it is bad for the economy. Simply put, when there are fewer people being born, there are people a government can tax.

If people in the country are not having kids, the tax base becomes smaller, so, a country needs to make the number of people in the country bigger. Immigration reform allowing more immigrants with legal means to come to the United States may solve the smaller tax base problem. A 2021 Report by the Center for American Progress outlined that putting undocumented workers on a path to citizenship would have a major impact on the United States economy. Specifically, the U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) could go up by $1.7 trillion over the next ten years.

Legal immigration pathways for undocumented citizens is not only the correct thing to do for those who work hard in the United States but could also offer immense benefits to the economy.
